Collectors' Weekly

(Typed on a plakatschrift Swissa Junior.)

Here is a link to the Collectors' Weekly Typewriters page.

So, while this may seem like a bit of a mixed post, my excitement at being featured on their site was not at all tempered by the discovery of the picture thief. After all, this happens all the time and it's not like CW is affiliated with eBay or their few unscrupulous sellers. The auction has since expired, but you can still see it here: http://cgi.ebay.ch/250840256543?clk_rvr_id=242244489429

This is my Olivetti Dora post from a while back. It seems the fellow received positive feedback in the end, so apparently the machine was fine and in working condition (although I wonder whether it had the same typeface as mine). I'm just appalled at the cheek of this person watermarking a stolen picture! The irony.

  1. Congratulations for your good news!

Your Swissa Junior looks great, especially love the techno typeface.

  2. Congratulations on your inclusion, it's well deserved.

Most of the time I just sigh at online image thievery and move on -- it's not worth spending the time to try to shame these shameless people.

  3. Wow. Twice. First to congratulate you to your selection for the Collectors', and second just to express my disgustion about this auction. eBay auction images are very sensitive, they're meant to illustrate the condition and eventual defects of an item. So this is very shameless, and I would definitely report this as abuse to eBay, also for being copyright violation.

  6. Your photo got that ebay seller a fine price! And I had no idea there was a website for general collectors - well done.

  7. Thanks, everyone! I am glad to raise awareness of Collectors' Weekly for those of you who did not know it; I hope you will enjoy checking the site as much as I have.

@lo-tech: The typeface here is not techno... plakatschrift is known in English as Bulletin or Display typeface :)

@Richard - Thanks for the commiseration! It's so easy to pick out my pictures because of that (garish) orange background, I don't even know why they bother. I guess the sellers are saying to themselves, what are the chances the original photographer will find out I stole their pictures? This time I did, but unfortunately it may happen more often than we realize.

@maschinengeschreiben: I was thinking to myself as well that it would be a shame if the seller was advertising a defective machine with my pictures... talk about caveat emptor! I'm glad the buyer seems pleased about it in the end, and it makes me feel less guilty about not having confronted the seller. Such a shame, though.

@notagain: Indeed, I considered unleashing the wrath of the typosphere upon this fellow - but the reality is that there is so little we can practically do. If his conscience does not prevent him from stealing in the first place, probably our emails would make little difference.

@Ted: Ha! Plakatschrift is cool, isn't it. The typecast may look huge, but the scale is actually true to life (because I typed on an A5 sheet). I don't know if this is as interesting as your large font Smith Corona, though!

@Rob: Exactly what I thought! Those typewriters don't usually sell for quite that much, but the pictures seem to have made a lot of difference. Who said crime doesn't pay? Ugh.
